Was That a Compliment?

A compliment that I've never really known how to respond to... 

I met a couple who had just had a baby and who would of guessed, she came out with red hair. As I got to talking with them they told me that they were worried when she came out with red hair and then something to this effect, " but you're really pretty  for a redhead so I guess there's hope." Seriously? Oh...umm thank you? I think, that was a compliment right? 

People seem to have this idea...

 "There are two kinds of redheads: ugly redheads and pretty redheads and NOTHING in between. If you are wondering what I am talking about then you’re the ugly one."

Well then...I guess I'm ugly because I simply don't understand or maybe I choose not to understand because quite frankly, how rude! Where does this come from? I mean how would you like it if someone said, You're really pretty, for a brunette or blonde or whatever...that would leave you wondering, wouldn't it?  I wonder if people understand what they are insinuating when they say that. I don't know if this even makes sense, I just feel this need to defend my red headed race, all redheads are beautiful, everyone is beautiful in there own way! Anyway sorry if this sounds like a rant! 

On the up side I have also been very complimented by the color of my hair! I had a girl tell me once that every time she saw me she thought of those shampoo commercials where the girls are swinging their hair back and forth. Ha ha. A few weeks ago I had another girl tell me that she thought I had the prettiest hair she's ever seen! A guy who stays at the hotel frequently told me he thought I was beautiful and that I had beautiful hair and to never change it. Ive had people (granted most of them are old but still..) envy my hair! These are the compliments and people that I love and will forever be grateful for! They make me happy and...they make me feel good about myself!
